Forest department blamed for jumbo menace

In a joint media conference here on Friday, Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore (ACICM) Convener M Lakshmana and M B Prabhu, Director, Bharatheeya Girijanara Shikshana Samsthe, Nagarahole, a NGO, alleged that the failure on the part of the forest department to check elephants from straying out of its periphery.

This was the main cause for jumbos to enter the city, killing one and injuring four others on Wednesday. 

Resorts

According to an information, 363 resorts have been permitted in Bandipura and Nagarahole forests area.

A resort with 200 cottages is coming up on a vast are near Mangala village,enroute Bandipura, encroaching the elephant corridor. 

When this is the grave reality, elephants look towards other areas in search of food, the duo alleged further.

Illegal sandmining, quarry and several other illegal activities have contributed to the increasing man-animal conflict, he said.
