Being ignored or excluded by colleagues and superiors is one of the most common forms of workplace bullying, with two thirds of respondents interviewed for the study saying they were victims.

Almost one third -- 29 per cent -- said colleagues deliberately left the room when they entered -- a form of psychological bullying. For the study, the researchers from the US and Chinese universities surveyed 200 workers in China.

The results revealed that bullying by co-workers was "positively related" to stress and employees who sucked up to the boss "neutralised" the bullying. The findings have been published in the 'Journal of Management Studies'.
