Normal life affected due to strike call by Geelani

Shops, business establishments, petrol pumps, banks and private schools remained closed due to the strike in the city, officials said. Public transport services were also affected due to the strike, they said.

The impact of the strike was lesser in other areas of the Valley especially tourist spots like Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg as thousands of tourists and locals thronged these places to escape the shutdown in Srinagar, they said. The authorities, however, did not impose any restrictions in old city areas of Srinagar.

"There are no restrictions on movement of people. We have normal deployment of security personnel to tackle any eventuality of law and order," a senior police officer said.

Geelani had called for a strike to pay tributes to those killed in last three years' during summer unrests, including the Amarnath agitation in 2008.

On June 11, 2010, 17-year-old Tufail Mattoo was killed in police action near Rajouri Kadal. More than 100 persons were killed in the following four months.

The Hurriyat hawk has been under house arrest since Thursday evening as a preventive measure as he had plans to organise a rally at Eidgah in downtown city.
