Last Updated 04 May 2018, 02:08 IST

The committee said that Brigadier General Atef Najib, who ran the political security department in the southern city of Daraa, was banned from travelling abroad to investigate his role in handling the anti- government protests in Daraa, Syria's official SANA news agency stated in a report Monday.

Judge Mohammad Deeb al-Mokatren, chairman of the special judicial committee, was quoted by SANA as saying "no-one has immunity regardless of status, adding that this travel ban is a precautionary procedure to ensure that the committee can summon him and complete investigations at any time."

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad recently fired and referred Najib to court for his alleged role in crushing protests.

Unprecedented anti-government protests erupted in mid-March in the city of Daraa and spread into most of the Syrian cities.
