Regional parents' meet in Manipal from today

Speaking to media persons here on Wednesday, Parivar President J P Gadkari said that the conference was aimed at bringing awareness and empowering the parents and persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As many as 100 delegates from all over the State are expected to take part.

There were 20 Parents’ Associations in Karnataka while there are as many as 6,747 persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Udupi district, he said and added that no census had been taken to identify the exact number of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the country since 2001.

Though according to rough estimation, 2.1 per cent of the total population in the country are persons with disabilities, according to World Health Organisation and UN inference, the number might have crossed 7 to 8 per cent in India, of which about 3 per cent are with intellectual and developmental disabilities, he added.

He informed that the conference will be inaugurated by BJP State President and MP from Udupi- Chikmagalur constituency D V Sadananda Gowda. Manipal University Pro-Chancellor Dr H S Ballal will be the guest of honor, he said.

President of Udupi Parents’ Association for Mentally Challenged Citizens Jai Vittal, Parivar Chief Operation Manager Vijaykanth, Sadhana Kini and others were present.
