The proposal of the state government, last year, to distribute money directly to the parents of the students to buy bicycles did not materialise. Now, putting an end to all the confusion, the government has decided to distribute cycles.

Mechanics from a Chennai-based private company are busy assembling bicycles and hope to complete the task in a week. The distribution process would follow.

Last year 10,651 students — 5,303 girls and 5,348 boys — studied in eighth standard and got promoted to 9th standard. They all would be proud owners of bicycles soon.

An equal number of bicycles have been received in the district to be distributed to the students studying in 8th standard now. The education department is expected to arrive at the exact numbers in a month.

The assembling of bicycles has been taken up blockwise in Chamarajanagar, Gundlupet, Kollegal, Yelandur and Hanur.

Quality

“The education department officials should ensure that good quality cycles are distributed to students, otherwise the students would not benefit from the scheme,” said Mahadevappa, a parent.

The private company would deliver bicycles to respective block education offices, which would be distributed to students in the presence of the respective MLAs, said deputy director of public instruction B A Rajashekar.
