'Sharks' have gobbled up 35 pc of lake

Following reports on the lake published in Deccan Herald, the officers of the Lake Division of the BBMP visited Subramanyapura Lake on Wednesday.

All that the officers found there were high levels of pollution, weeds and settlement on the encroached tank-bed, thereby choking the once pristine lake. The survey map the officers carried with them showed that more than 35 per cent of the lake was encroached, while the water-body had shrunk far below 50 per cent.

The officers also found that the pillars used for fencing were of sub-standard quality and were not laid properly. The officers pulled up the contractor who implemented the project and threatened to blacklist him.

According to the survey maps brought by the Palike officers, the lake was once spread on 18 acres of land. But now it had lost more than six acres to encroachment.

“We are in touch with the Revenue officials to issue notices to the encroachers. Now that a certified copy of the actual area of the lake, along with encroachment has come to light, it has become easy to protect it,” said a Palike engineer.
