Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri announced that 100 new government PU colleges will be started in the 2009-10 academic year to cater to the increasing number of students.

On the new PU colleges, Dr R N Nadadur, Principal Secretary, Primary and Secondary Education, said, “The new colleges will be a mixture of government and government-aided colleges spread across the State. The Department of PUE has made a study  on the requirement of PU colleges in the State. Based on criteria and the requirement, colleges will be sanctioned to the districts.”

Admitting that infrastructure was an issue in the new colleges, Nadadur said, “Most of the unaided colleges already have  certain basic infrastructure while it is absent in the government colleges. Infrastructure needs will be provided to the government colleges and the finance will be drawn from the State Education Budget for this purpose.”

S G Hedge, Commissioner, PUE Department said that the department had the details on the districts which required PU colleges. “A study has been made and districts have been identified  where PU colleges are available without any students and also where infrastructure for the high number of students is inadequate. In such districts, the colleges may be relocated to the places where there is a high number of students,” Hegde pointed out. The Principal Secretary also said that the recruitment of PU lecturers through the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) will satiate the requirement of faculty for the new colleges. “As many as 2,000 PU lecturers will be recruited within this month and the verification of  lecturers’ documents will take place by the end of this month. However, if KPSC recruitment does not come by, then the proposal for the guest lecturers will be initiated to combat the faculty crunch,” Nadadur said.

As many as 8.49 lakh candidates appeared for the SSLC 2009 examination of which 5.96 lakh students have passed.
