A selection committee headed by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court has selected Rao for the post and the 1973-batch IAS officer has sent his consent letter accepting the new position, sources said.

Rao is likely to be appointed to the Bangalore bench of CAT. The State government has also agreed to relieve Rao from the CS post, it is learnt. Rao took over as chief secretary on February 6, 2008 and is due for retirement in September this year.

The State government, meanwhile, is toying with the idea of appointing S V Ranganath as the new chief secretary. He is now member of the the Atomic Energy Commission. He belongs to the 1975 batch of IAS officers.  Ranganath has served as a joint secretary to former chief minister Ramakrishna Hegde. He was also Principal Secretary to Veerappa Moily and S M Krishna.
