Govt to give 30,000 sites to workers

Addressing a press conference along with Party state president K S Eshwarappa on Friday, Somanna said the programme to provide sites to poor industrial workers will begin from Shimoga and Koppal where 1,000 sites will be allocated.

The project taken up under the Vajapayee housing scheme will provide sites measuring 600 sq ft  (20x30 ft ) or 1200 sq ft (30x40 ft) to the employees along with a subsidy of Rs 50,000 for construction of houses.

Stating that the selection of beneficiaries and acquisition of land have been entrusted to deputy commissioners of all the districts, he said that the land will be purchased from private owners by paying market price.

He said that as a pilot project, 1,000 sites will be allotted each in Shimoga and Koppal districts. “Of these thousand sites in Shimoga, 800 houses will be given to acrecanut peeling workers.”

“We met these workers in Shimoga and had a discussion with them. The problem is about the income of the beneficiaries, with the slab fixed at  Rs 17,000 per annum. But we have now decided to raise the limit to below Rs 10,000 per month. It will be approved in the next cabinet meeting,” said Eshwarappa.

He said that the sites will be distributed through Karnataka State Small Industries Development Corporation.
