An MBA degree holder, Padhiyar with the salary of Rs 40,000 had walked into an Ahmedabad showroom some five months back and while on a test drive fled away with the swanky car.

For almost two months,  Padhiyar kept the car at his home. And sensing that the police trail had gone cold he came out with the audi until he was arrested. By that time he had already drove some 12,000 km.

The accused avoided toll gates and used the applied for registration board to evade detection.

Padhiyar claiming to be working with a private insurance company is a resident of Gandhinagar and married with two children. Tempted to own this SUV, he had done several recces at the Audi showroom and convinced by his flashy lifestyle even the showroom salespersons were convinced that Padhiyar could afford the SUV.

Finally, he took Chandresh Desai, a sales representative with him on the test drive and after about 3 km from the showroom, Desai asked him to take the wheel. But when Desai got out, Padhiyar immediately sped off with the car.

“The police had been tipped off about this car moving around with an applied for registration sticker,’’ said Mayur Chavda, assistant commissioner of police (crime).

Chavda said Padhiyar conceded that he was fascinated by SUVs and he had been driving several SUVs owned by family members and friends.  “It was this desire that convinced him to steal this car,’’ said Chavda.
