As the seat selection process for general category candidates for the Common Entrance Test (CET) commences on Monday, the brightest among the students are once again expected to choose government medical colleges in the State over the private ones.

Karnataka, which has the largest private medical education sector in the country, has shown a consistent trend in the last few years wherein seats in government colleges have been lapped up faster than those in private colleges.

As per the cut-offs published by the Karnataka Examination Authority for 2010, Bangalore Medical College and Mysore Medical College -- both decades-old government colleges -- recorded the highest cut-off rank among all colleges offered through the CET.

In the general category, Bangalore Medical College had the highest cut-off rank of 86, while Mysore Medical College, had the next best cut-off rank of 204.  Government medical colleges at Hubli and Bellary also did well, with the Karnataka Medical College (Hubli) bagging the fifth highest cut-off rank( 424), and Vijaynagara Institute of Medical Sciences perched at the tenth position with a cut-off rank of 820.

The reasons for the success of government medical colleges are not difficult to fathom; these colleges charge 40 per cent of the fee (Rs 16,700) charged by private ones (Rs 42,500).

Even the six newer government medical colleges have fared better than several private colleges. These colleges, despite remaining under a cloud of doubt due to delays in approval from the Medical Council of India, have got brighter candidates than several private colleges

The other important factor driving preference is location. Colleges based in Bangalore were the most popular, with four of the top five colleges ranked by cut-offs from the city. Besides BMC, the other colleges are Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences and MS Ramaiah Medical College.

Dakshin Kannada is also a popular destination for medical education  with two colleges from the Manipal group stable along with Father Muller Medical College being quite popular.
