Cong slams Maya over rise in crimes

Last Updated 20 June 2011, 17:38 IST

“The state government and the chief minister are not showing even an iota of seriousness,” Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said at a media briefing at the party headquarters here. Demanding immediate action to check “atrocities against women” Jayanti said that the situation in the state has “deteriorated to anarchy” and the recent incidents are a “blot on the government and administrative machinery”.

Quoting reports that there had been six rape incidents in the past two days, Natarajan alleged that “hardly any action has been taken by the government”. Pointing out that the victims have been mainly from the disadvantaged sections of the society, the main vote bank of Mayawati, Natarajan said: “The CM should ensure that action is taken and speedy justice is delivered in the cases. Otherwise, she will cease to have the moral authority to continue in office.”
