'Include Western Ghats to heritage list'

Senior researcher M Chidananda Moorthy opined that by including Western Ghats to the list of heritage spots the misuse of the place by vested interests would be prevented.

Speaking to newspersons on his visit to Mandya to attend a programme, he said the government is giving lame excuses that the decision to include it in the list would hinder development works in the place. He wondered what development works could be taken up in the forest region? Protecting the forest cover, trees and species is itself a development, he said.

Development does not mean setting up concrete jungles. Hence, it is not wrong in including it in the heritage list, he stressed. Commenting on including Hampi to the heritage list, he said that it has been done in view of more number of tourists, especially foreigners visiting the place. But, UNESCO has taken steps to prevent illegal activities at the site, he added.

Chidananda Moorthy opposed the proposal of the government to provide education in English medium to those studying in 6th and 7th standards. The medium of education should be in mother tongue up to high school level, he said and flayed the government for introducing English medium in the primary level itself.
