Marriage of minor girl halted in city

First case of child marriage; prevented on time

Marriage of the girl, aged 15, from Janata Nagar, was fixed with her neighbour Shivaraj, a 23-year-old tailor, at Sri Ranga Community Hall in Nivedita Nagar on Monday. The muhurat (auspicious time to tie the knot) was fixed between 10.05 am and 10.45 am, when the officers team landed at the choultry around 9.45 am.

They succeeded in convincing the parents of both bride and groom about the marriage that would be illegal, and also obtained their signatures on a bond. |

According to the bond, the girl is not entitled to be married till she attains 18 years, the legal age for marriage according to Hindu Marriage Act.

Mention must be made of sumptuous food that had been prepared for lunch for nearly 1,000 people.

While a few preferred to stay back at least for lunch, there were others who thought it wise to leave the choultry. Of late, child marriages stopped at the eleventh hour have been reported from neighbouring districts.
