Credit boost to agri sector sought

Speaking at the 117th review meeting of the State-Level Bankers’ Committee, Karnataka, got up to appraise the performance of the banking sector regarding flow of credit to agriculture, micro and small enterprises, Ranganath said it was important that these sectors were given adequate funding.

“This year, the credit for agriculture is about Rs 15,700 crore, while last year it was Rs 16,600 crore. There is a decline of credit for agriculture. The overall growth of the State will be affected with the decline in agricultural growth,” he said. He also observed that the credit diverted towards education was poor.

Additional Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner Meera Saxena said there was need to orient lower level functionaries so that schemes like providing Kisan credit cards, etc, can be implemented effectively.

Chairman of SLBC and managing director of Syndicate Bank Basant Seth, in his keynote address, said as of March 2011, banking services have been provided to 1,571 villages out of 3,395 villages without banks identified.
