Soon after his arrival he called on  Governor N N Vohra. During the meeting they reviewed the latest security situation in the state and the arrangements being made for the Amarnath yatra, beginning June 29.

Chidambaram is slated to preside over an important meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and senior officers of police, security forces and civil administration on Tuesday. He is also expected to  visit Pahalgam in south Kashmir and interact with the local officers there.

This is home minister’s first visit to Kashmir this year. His visit to the valley comes four days after the successful and peaceful completion of the Panchyayat elections, which recorded high poll percentage despite separatists and militants call to boycott the polls.

Chidambaram is also expected to meet the local Congress leaders in view of the war of words between them and the leaders of coalition partner,  the National Conference.  The leaders of the two parties have been issuing fiery statements against each other after some Congress men demanded an end to the term of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah next year and appointment of their party leader as the new chief minister of the state.

Omar has been, however,  stating that he is the chief minister for full six years as per an agreement reached between National Conference and Congress after the 2008 Assembly polls.
