Police refuse to name officials in fake encounter

The Gujarat high court had last week ordered a CBI probe into the encounter of Sadiq Jamal in 2003. The crime branch had killed Sadiq on the outskirts of Ahmedabad claiming he was an LeT operative who was on a mission to kill Chief minister Narendra Modi.

This was the first amongst a series of encounters that took place post Godhra riots. Three other such cases are already being probed as fake encounters. The High court, while ordering a CBI probe, had asked Sadiq brother Shabbir to file a complaint with the Ahmedabad crime branch before the CBI begins inquiry.

Shabir, in his complaint, had detailed the role of the senior cops along with the then joint director of the central Information Bureau Rajendra Kumar, the list which the crime branch chose to overlook while filing the FIR.

Shabir had named as many as 17 police officials including the then DGP of Gujarat, K Chakravarthy and the then DCP in crime branch D G Vanzara in the FIR.

Vanzara is already arrested in connection with Sohrabudin fake encounter case. However, Ahmedabad Crime Branch chose to leave out the issue of conspiracy behind the murder and merely charges the officials of the branch at that point in time.Interestingly, the FIR even did not name the concerned officials.
