A 30-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide after killing both her minor children in east Delhi’s Mandawali on Wednesday afternoon, following a tiff with her husband.

They have been identified as Sarita, her five-year-old daughter Pari and 11-month-old son Rudra.

The police said Sarita was found hanging from a ceiling fan, Pari drowned in the washing machine in the bathroom and Rudra lying dead on the floor.

Sarita married Devendra, a textile designer by profession, in 2005 and livedon the first floor of a three-storey house in Mandawali. “Devendra claims he was in his office at the Patparganj Industrial Area when Sarita made a phone call at around 2.15 pm, saying that she was going to commit suicide,” a police officer said.

Disturbed over the call, Devendra rushed to his house, where he found the front door of his flat locked from inside. His family members lived on the ground floor.

“Devendra then broke open the door with help of his neighbour Heeralal Saket, and entered the house,” the officer added. They, however, found Sarita hanging from a ceiling fan and Rudra lying dead on the floor. Soon after, Devendra was shocked to find daughter Pari drowned in the washing machine.

The police were informed of the incident by Heeralal at around 2:30 pm, following which a local police team along with doctors reached the spot. “The entire area was cordoned off after Sarita, Pari and Rudra were declared dead,” the officer said.

According to neighbours, Sarita and Devendra often used to quarrel over petty issues. “They had yet another heated argument and scuffle late on Tuesday, in which Devendra sustained bruises and scratches. His shirt was also torn in the scuffle,” claimed their neighbour and former local councillor Brijpal Singh.

Singh also claimed that Sarita and Devendra had approached a family court around two years ago over a long-lasting issue. The matter was resolved in the first hearing.
Devendra's elder brother Virendra, who works at the post office, lives with his family and mother on the ground floor of the same building as Devendra, while his eldest sister resides on the second floor with her husband.

When the incident occurred, Virendra's family was present on the ground floor. Their sister had gone to attend a marriage ceremony in Ghazipur with her husband . Brijpal added that Pari was said to be mentally challenged, and had physically deformity in one leg. Pari's aunt used to take her to a hospital in Preet Vihar for medical treatment. One of the neighbours claimed that both the children were last seen at around 11 am in the house. The police said that they have registered a case in this regard and further investigation is underway.
