World Bank aid for 14 more engg colleges

Each college will get Rs 12.50 crore in the second phase of the World Bank project whereas special grants of Rs five crore will be provided for establishing “Centre of Excellence” in 10 colleges. The Union government pays 75 per cent of the financial assistance while the rest will be borne by the State Government.

The second phase of the project will be in force till 2014. The representatives of the beneficiary colleges and officers of the Technical Education Department entered into a memorandum of understanding in this regard on Friday. Higher Education Minister Dr V S Acharya who was present on the occasion appealed to private educational institutions to join hands in shouldering social responsibility too. Of the 14 colleges, six are in Bangalore.

Grants for scholarship

The State Government would release a grant of Rs 25 lakh for payment of scholarship to toppers in Sanskrit, according to the Higher Education Minister. Speaking at the inauguration of the Sanskrit Education Directorate, the minister said 100 acres of land have been reserved for the Sanskrit University in Magadi. He said the Government had given its permission to fill up vacancies of Sanskrit lecturers in colleges. He disclosed that 230 aided and 80 unaided institutions were functioning under the Sanskrit University.
