Closure of road leaves villagers in distress

Last Updated 31 July 2009, 19:23 IST

The 16.5 km Makutta road was in deplorable condition for the past several years. However, with the PWD starting the work on repairing the road, the movement of vehicles from Perumbadi to Kootupole bridge has been banned.

Makutta which is 24 km away from Virajpet depends on Virajpet for all the essential commodities. Most of the residents in Makutta are labourers. With the closure of the road, villagers are not in a position to get even ration.

As there are no vehicles, the attendence in school has reduced drastically in Makutta primary school. Moreover, teachers find it difficult to reach Makutta from Virajpet.
The 14 families residing in Memanakolli, Vatekolli are in dire distress.

However, now with the closure of the road, people can not connect to Kerala even for ayurveda medicines. To go to Iritti, Peravooru, Kannur and Talacherry, one has to take a long journey which takes 120 kms.

The villagers of Makutta, Memanakolli and Vatekolli urged the district administration to allow the movement of light vehicles between 5 pm and 8 pm on the road.

The road work which commenced in April is likely to be completed by December.
