BJP retains Purnia assembly seat in Bihar

The BJP nominee defeated her nearest rival Ram Charitra Yadav of Congress by 23,665 votes. CPM candidate Amit Sarkar, who is son of late Ajit Sarkar, former Purnia MLA, came a distant third as he polled only 17,113 votes.

The by-election was necessitated since BJP legislator from this Assembly constituency Raj Kishore Keshri was stabbed to death by a local school principal Rupam Pathak in January this year. Rupam had charged the slain leader with rape.

Keshri’s widow Kiran was eventually made the BJP nominee from the seat which saw poor electoral turnout of mere 44 per cent on the day of polling. The by-election also saw fissures in the RJD-LJP combine as Lalu backed the CPM nominee while the LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan was rooting for the Congress candidate.
