After drought, it's deluge in Uttar Pradesh

According to official sources here on Saturday, major rivers of the state including Rapti, Ghaghra and Saryu were maintaining a rising trend all along their course in the state.

Flood waters have inundated hundreds of villages in Gorakhpur, Basti, Siddharthnagar, Shravasti, Faizabad, Barabanki, Lakhimpur Kheri and Ballia districts, the sources said.
While standing crops have been destroyed at many places, thousands of people have fled their homes and have taken shelter at safer places, they said.

Heavy rains in the neighbouring Nepal have triggered the release of huge amount of water into the Suheli river in Faizabad, forcing people to leave their homes, the sources said.
At some places cracks were also reported in the embankments.

Authorities have pressed motor boats into action to shift the affected people to safer places and have launched relief operations, the sources said.
