Gadag girl abuse case: Bail of main accused cancelled

The court dismissed the anticipatory bail application of Pednekar’s wife Meenaxi and her sister-in-law Tina Waghle, making their arrest imminent.

SP North Goa Bosco George told Deccan Herald that the Pednekars and their sister-in-law were absconding.

All three face charges under the IPC, Goa Children’s Act and Prevention of Atrocities (SC/ST) Act.

The 10-year-old girl from Gadag, who worked as a maid for the family in Goa, was subjected to traumatic physical abuse by the Pednekar family over the last seven months, the court was told. A panel of senior doctors appointed by the Goa Medical College said the girl had suffered grievous injuries, including burns, deliberately inflicted on her by her employer and his family.

The medical report listed 23 injuries on her body. It said her face carried permanent disfigurement marks. Pednekar, an engineer, employed the child through a middleman who received Rs 4,000 as commission.

The girl’s mother who worked here as a construction labourer had left her in the care of her grandparents who lived in Vasco.

The police said the mother had been traced but the girl was reluctant to go back to her family. She is being treated in Goa Medical College under the care of an NGO and no one is allowed access to her.
