<p>One of the main reservoirs in the Cauvery basin, Harangi is the second reservoir to inch towards maximum capacity after Kabini reservoir in the basin.<br /><br />The water level in the reservoir, which has a maximum capacity of 2,859 feet, was 2,856 on Saturday at 8 am. The inflow of water into the reservoir rose from 355 cusecs at 8 am to 1,900 cusecs a little later. As a result, about 1,000 cusecs of water was released from the reservoir at 11 am.<br /><br />Compared to last year, the reservoir has reached its maximum capacity 25 days ahead. Last year, the reservoir reached its maximum capacity on July 27. The reservoir can store 8.5 tmc ft of water and presently has 7.5 tmc ft of water.<br /><br />Water is being released from the reservoir to maintain the water level at 2,856 ft and ensure safety. The catchment area has recorded a total of 190.64 mm of rainfall since the beginning of monsoon.<br /><br />Executive Engineer of Harangi reservoir, Nanjunde Gowda, said the reservoir is supplying water to 1.35 lakh acres of agriculture land in Kodagu, Mysore and Hassan districts.<br />A warning siren was sounded to alert people in low-lying areas before opening the crest gates.<br /><br />In Karwar<br /><br />Taluks in the coastal belt, plains and ghat regions of Uttara Kannada district received heavy rain on Saturday accompanied by gusty winds.<br /><br />Residents living around the Urdu Primary School in Kadavada village were anxious as soil from a nearby hillock started sliding down due to the heavy rain.<br /><br />Deputy Commissioner B N Krishnaiah, Superintendent of Police R Ramesh and Assistant Commissioner O Kishanchand visited the spot. Krishnaiah allayed fear among residents, saying students of the Urdu school were shifted to the Kannada school nearby.<br /><br />Gusty winds uprooted a tree opposite the RTO office on National Highway-17, but no casualties were reported. In the last 24 hours, the district has received 666.3 mm rainfall. Bhatkal recorded 163 mm of rainfall, Ankola 80.8, Honnavar 113 and Karwar 79 mm.<br /></p>
