'State police could have prevented riots'

At a press conference, NCM Chairperson Mohammed Shafi Qureshi, who had visited the riot-hit areas,  expressed his satisfaction over the police action in preventing the riots from going out of control, and the State government’s initiative to compensate the victims. He said he had suggested Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to direct the intelligence wing to be more alert to prevent such untoward incidents.

Compensation

Qureshi, accompanied by members, H S Hanspal and Spalzes Angmo, said that though the State has done its bit to help the victims, by granting them compensation.

The commission has requested the government to give Rs two lakh to the family of those killed and Rs one lakh to those who suffered loss of property and sustained injuries in the July 2 incident.

“The chief minister has agreed to our demand that the kin of those killed in the riots be given a job,” he added.
