'Inform authorities on misuse of BPL cards or face action'

Point of Sale fair price shops in Sullia, Belthangady as pilot taluks

Addressing the meeting held to decide over the implementation of ‘Point of Sale’ system in fair price shops in the district, at Belthangady Taluk Panchayat on Sunday, he said that blunders have taken place while distributing BPL cards and as a result genuine beneficiaries have been deprived of one while rich and elite are smugly utilising BPL cards.

“Fair price shop owners usually know the condition and status of people who come to collect ration to their shops. In such a case, if they find BPL cards in wrong hands, they should inform the authorities concerned, failing which stern action will be initiated against them.

“The names of the informers will be concealed by the department,” he said and added that government is contemplating to scrap off the system of outsourcing fair price shops. It is thinking of running it on its own as it is done in Chandigarh.

Point of Sale

With the aim of improving efficiency and accuracy in distribution of ration, the Government will start the concept of Point of Sale in fair price shops soon with Sullia and Belthangady Taluks in the district as pilot taluks.

Under this system, he informed that the ration can be collected either by the head of the family or by any member of the family.

The entire details of the family like the quantity of ration to be given, number of members in the family etc will be fed in the computer along with the thumb imprints of the head and members of the family.

The ration will be provided to the person who comes to collect the ration only if the imprints tally.

He said that about 26 companies had come forth to handle the project, of which 20 companies had already provided ration at various places on trial basis for a period of one month.

Fair price shop at Jaladurga in Karkala has the system in place already.
