Govt to promote over 3,000 ITBP head constables to ASI rank

A total of 3,130 ITBP troopers would be benefited by this step as it is for the first time that such a large number of personnel have been promoted to higher ranks in one go.

A senior ITBP officer said the step is being taken for operational effectiveness of the force. "The step will also help the force to fill the crucial posts of section commanders. While our regular service battalions will have 71 ASIs each, the frontier formations will also have a complement of these officials," the officer said.

The ITBP guards the 3,488 km long Sino-Indian border besides performing other internal security duties and undertaking anti-naxal operations. With this decision, part of the re-structuring programme of the force approved recently by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the force will deploy 3,101 officials in the beginning and the vacant ranks would be filled subsequently.

A Head Constable of the force would usually wait for many years to get promoted to the next rank of ASI but this step would act as the much-needed morale booster for these personnel, the officer said.

An ASI commands a complement of about 20-25 jawans.
