Government launches national transport portal

New system can help agencies to track stolen vehicles and fake licences
Last Updated 20 July 2011, 19:02 IST

The portal — an online database of all the registered vehicles and driving licences of the entire country — will help the investigating agencies to track stolen vehicles or fake driving licences.

According to the system, all the RTOs have to digitalised their driving licences and registration of certificate of all the vehicles registered by them. These RTOs are connected to state registry which will in turn are linked to the national vehicle registry.
The registry will be accessible to all the states and RTOs across the country for quick verification.  With the information available online, the RTOs can verify the facts about persons applying for driving licence or vehicles seeking registration — particularly the old ones. “If a person has applied for licences or applied for transfer of ownership of vehicles, it can be detected whether the same person has got a DL elsewhere or vehicle registered at any other place,” a senior official in the ministry told Deccan Herald.

As all the RTOs start accessing the registry, holding multiple or forged driving licences of different states will not be possible, said the official.

All RTOs linked

The portal, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), has linked all the 975 RTOs across the country. Records of 60 per cent of the total 12.5 crore registered vehicles and driving licences in the country has been digitised so far and the rest will be completed in another four months.

Hassle free service

Apart from this, the Transport Ministry is also working on providing hassle free services offered by the RTOs be it issuing driving licences, vehicle registration, transfer of ownership or issuance of national goods permit. By the year-end, one would be able to make online payments.

Ministry also plans to launch a host of  services linked to your vehicle through SMS. This will include informing you of the due date for your insurance payment, Pollution Under Control check-up, etc.
