'Thirugaata makes Yakshagana more popular'

Addressing at the silver jubilee celebrations of Shri Mahaganapathi Yakshagana Mandali, Nidle-Dharmastala at the Town Hall here on Sunday, Joshi said that the reputation of Yakshagana art form becomes widely known through Thirugaata. Artistes perform Yakshagana at different places across the nation through Thirugaata and as a result more and more new art lovers are attracted towards Yakshagana, he added.

“It was only through Thirugaata that the popularity of Yakshagana was increased considerably at several places in Andhra Pradesh as well as in other states. Hence, more importance should be given to Thirugaata for the development of Yakshagana,” he added.

Further Joshi said that the Yakshagana exponents of yesteryears Keremane Shambhu Hegde and Kota Shivaram Karanth contributed significantly for the development of the art.

The programme was inaugurated by Shri Kshetra Kateel priest Lakshminarayana Asranna while Odiyooru Shri Gurudevadatta Samstanam pontiff Shri Gurudevananda Swamiji and Shridhama Manila pontiff Shri Mohanadasa Swamiji blessed the occasion. District Kannada Sahitya Parishat President S Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and Yakshagana patron Kadri Navaneeth Shetty were present.

Senior Yakshagana artistes Kubanooru Shridhar Rao and Pookala Lakshminarayana Bhat were felicitated on the occasion. Later, ‘Kusha-Lava’, a Yakshagana was staged as part of the programme.
