Specially abled don't stand a chance here

The startling revelation came to light when Deccan Herald met with Anuradha, secretary of Mysore District Parents Association for Empowering the Developmentally Disabled (MDPAEDD).She said that apart from Plastic Engineering Private Limited, Special Purpose Machineries and A J Stationaries in the city, none of the remaining 647 companies listed in CII had come forward to provide job opportunities to the specially abled.

She said the association approached industries to provide jobs to persons born with autism, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities, who were provided vocational training skills at special schools and rehabilitation centres.

Anuradha opined that many a times specially abled persons can be employed to do monotonous and repetitive jobs, which regular employees find too tedious.

The association has developed three types of empowerment projects titled Swayam, Saadhya and Kuteer. Specially abled persons are enrolled in each programme based on the level of their special abilities.

She said the association wants to break all barriers and provide better job opportunity by increasing salary of mentors of special employees as well. ’Swayam’ needs financial resources for investing on self-owned businesses, which the association would like to provide. At the same time, the association gives funds for special persons to purchase equipment and machines in order to encourage specially abled persons to become self employed.

In order to improve awareness among people about the plight of specially abled people, the association in collaboration with Rotary Club of Mysore West is organising ‘Evergreen Melodies’, a musical evening commemorating the death anniversary of Mohammed Rafi.

V N Prasad and troupe will help raise funds for a new employment project planned by association by regaling audiences on July 25 at 6 pm at Jaganmohan Palace with hits of the legendary singer.

The donor passes for ‘Evergreen Melodies’, the music event will be available at the venue too.
