Glamourous: Aishwarya Rai BachchanThe ubiquitous ‘M’ code

There is an unwritten but a very visible bias in Bollywood against the leading ladies who embrace the ‘M’ word, that is marriage and motherhood, like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Says Derek Bose, a veteran industry observer and a prolific author of numerous books on film industry, “It is strange that the shelf life of the heroines is decreasing day by day.

When Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman and Rekha were at the helm, the prime period of B-town actresses lasted for ten to twelve years. But now, it is reduced to four or five years and I see a time, not far away, when it will be two or three years. Everyone is looking for a fresh face — the producers, directors and heroes. The aging heroes prefer working with young girls as it also reduces their own age on screen and with so many beauty pageants and modelling agencies around, there is no scarcity of fresh faces.”

He adds, “But with all this, the status of a Hindi film heroine in Bollywood is still that of an ‘add on’ and not of a ‘main course’ in most of the films. This is true specially when it comes to the mainstream movies. Heroine-oriented movies can be counted on the fingertips.”

Beautiful: RekhaNo conventional roles for Rekha

Ace film director and producer Ram Gopal Varma praises Rekha for not coming back to the film world. He says, “Among yesteryear’s actresses, Rekha continues to be beautiful. If she is not being seen more often, it could be because she does not want to do those conventional mother roles. I think she is correct in avoiding them. All of us would like to remember her as a sexy siren rather than see her in films as a mother making chapathis in the kitchen.”

Creating sensational headlines

Many stars in India are in news for things other than their acting skills. Mallika Sherawat became a sensational star and earned her first career headlines for kissing a hero 17 times in her debut movie, Khwaish. Actor Emraan Hashmi is labelled as a ‘serial kisser’ for his numerous lip stunts on screen. Newcomer Arunoday Singh seems to be the new candidate for his exercise. This year, in Sudhir Mishra’s Yeh Saali Zindagi, he kissed 23 times on screen and created a buzz because nobody, in Bollywood films, kisses more than once or in casual banter.

Living life to the fullest

For the past few weeks, Bipasha Basu’s personal life has been grabbing a lot of headlines. Daily stories of her break-up with long time beau John Abraham flood the news but the actress insists, “I have nothing to say. Enough has already been spoken about it. Right now, I am enjoying life.”

Keeping her distracted are the multiple movie projects she is shooting for, including her first Hollywood flick, ‘Singularity’, which she just finished working on.

A day for diamonds

Hardik Hundiya, an organiser of many shows in the glamour world, has planned to celebrate International Diamond Day every year on August 12. At a press meet held recently, Hardik declared, “Though we have Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Rose Day, we don’t have a Diamond Day.”

Since there are nine planets and nine rashis, Hardik invited nine brand ambassadors for the event. Deepshikha was the first to come. Others present were Misti Mukherjee, Yuvika Chaudhary, Mink Brar, Sayantani Ghosh, Rucha Gujrati, Hrishita Bhatt, Sofia Hayat and Neeru Bajwa, who specially came from Chandigarh for this event.

Misti Mukherjee and Mink told the media that every year, on August 12, they should get one diamond gift from the organiser of the event.

Deepshikha was emotional about the date since her father’s birthday falls on the same day.

Booted out of Dutt camp

Recent buzz is that Kangana Ranaut’s friendship with Sanjay Dutt and his wife Maanyata has soured after she declined two films with the actor.

While it has been widely reported that Kangana opted out of Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Department’ to do Vishal Bhardwaj’s sequel of Ishqiya, there seems to be more to her exit than meets the eye.

The latest is that she was ousted from RGV’s movie for declining two films with Sanjay (who plays the lead in ‘Department’) and that’s also why she apparently wasn’t invited for Dutt’s wife Maanyata’s birthday party last month though they are believed to be good friends.

According to sources, the first movie Kangana refused with Sanjay was his next home production, the remake of Satte Pe Satta.

However, when Kangana rejected ‘Happily Divorced’, the Dutts were extremely
upset with her decision.

Sanjay and Kangana have worked together in ‘Knock Out’ and Double Dhamaal
and will soon be seen in Rascals’.
