Heavy rains lash capital on I-Day

The city received incessant rainfall since late Sunday. But there was no dearth in excitement and fervor as hundreds of people, including politicians and eminent personalities, and schoolchildren gathered at the historic Red Fort in the walled city to witness the unfurling of the tricolor.

The Safdarjung weather office recorded 28.5 mm of rainf till 8.30 a.m. Monday, taking the seasonal total to 325.8 mm. The rainfall so far is 20 percent deficient.

"The capital will receive rainfall throughout the day but skies will remain clear for next three days. Rains will be back towards the end of the week," said an official of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.2 degrees Celsius, a notch below average.
