The suspect was handed over to the Bharathinagar police, after he was thrashed black and blue. Peter (21), was later taken to Bowring Hospital for treatment.

According to the police, Shabbir, a footwear merchant and a resident of Modi Road in DJ Halli, had gone to Coimbatore on Sunday to sell footwear. He returned on Wednesday morning and got down at the Cantonment railway station. He was accosted by two persons - Peter and Ashok - while walking towards his house on Lepakshi Road in Bamboo Bazaar.

Peter caught hold of Shabbir, while Ashok snatched the latter’s bag containing Rs 20,000 and a cellphone, and ran away. Peter also tried to escape but Shabbir held him back.

Shabbir raised an alarm when Peter managed to escape. A few passersby caught Peter.
