The incident which occurred during the daylight sent shockwaves among those present on the court premises. Todewale who suffered head injuries is being treated at a private hospital.
According to the police, Todewale and Shabana married in 1999. They have filed for divorce before the court. The couple have a child.
The case came up for hearing on Friday. When Todewale was walking towards the court, his brothers-in-law - Younis Budannavar and Farooq Budannavar, residents of Azad Nagar - assaulted him with machetes.
Both the accused have surrendered to the police after the attack.
Market police have registered cases against the two accused and four others who aided them.
