5 die as heavy rain lashes UP

Heavy rains were recorded in Faizabad, Sitapur, Lakhimpur-Kheri, Sonebhadra, Barabanki and other towns in the state in the past 24 hours disrupting normal life and affecting movement of trains and vehicles.

The overall flood situation in the state worsened following incessant rain in the catchment areas, sources said adding major rivers including Ganga, Yamuna, Rapti and Ghaghra were flowing above the danger mark at many places.

Floods have affected hundreds of villages in the state displacing over four lakh people, officials here said.

Large tracts of land have been inundated by the flood waters in many districts. Authorities have pressed motor boats to shift people to safer places in Barabanki and Baharaich districts.

Flood waters have also affected movement of vehicles on the busy Delhi-Lucknow National Highway.

Flood waters were flowing over the highway near Moradabad, officials said. In Lakhimpur-Kheri district, many villages have been totally cut off owing to floods.
