Residents evacuate around Vasco pipeline

Last Updated 20 August 2011, 17:09 IST

Five people have been injured and three houses gutted in the fire triggered by a naphta pipeline leak on Friday night.

Though the fire was partially contained on Friday night, leaking naphtha exploded into flames again on Saturday .

“We have evacuated over 150 people from this area as 40 metres of the pipeline is still in flames,” Mormugao deputy collector Levinson Martin said.

The pipeline supplies naphtha to Zuari Industries Ltd. Officials said work on the highway could have damaged the 20 inch diameter pipeline. The state fire services requisitioned help from the Navy, Goa Shipyard, Mormugao Port Trust and Zuari to battle the fire as flames shot up 20 metres high in some places.

The rains provided some assistance in keeping the fire down. This is the second major fire on the Zuari pipeline in the last four months.
