This year, only 50 to get Rajyotsava award

Speaking to mediapersons in Bagalkot on Sunday, the minister said there was no appropriate yardstick to select Rajyotsava awardees. Hence, there has been an indiscriminate distribution of the award. In the wake of criticism against its crass distribution, efforts are underway to revise the yardstick while choosing the awardees.

Only those who have rendered service for a minimum of 25 years in the fields of theatre, literature and folk arts shall be considered for the award, he added.

However, age shall not be a criterion while choosing individuals who have emerged champions at national and international level. A meeting will be convened with higher officials in the Department of Kannada and Culture for revision of yardstick, he said. “There is no change in awarding a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and 20 gm of gold to Rajyotsava awardees,” he clarified.

In future, the State government shall felicitate and honour candidates from the State, who pass out in Indian Administrative Services examinations either in Kannada or other languages, with Rs one lakh as cash prize, he said.
