Last Updated 23 August 2011, 19:33 IST

M T Nanaiah, special prosecutor for Lokayukta, has submitted that merely because the accused persons were not arrested by the police and have been co-operating with investigating officer cannot be a ground for bail.

In the objections filed before the Court, the Lokayukta has pointed out at several incidents including withdrawal of money to the tune of over Rs three crore belonging to 165 villagers through 355 cheques.

Lokayukta has also dismissed Katta’s medical grounds, his status or age as ground for relief.

Word to media

The judge also mentioned the role of media as alleged by the accused that their privacy was at stake with media reporting even on the food being sent to them in the prison.
The judge cited a short story by famous writer Premchand titled ‘Parda’ saying the media should act responsibly and should not unnecessarily take away the liberty of privacy by sensationalising trivial things like food consumed by the prisoners.

9-member team

The Victoria Hospital has constituted a nine-member committee comprising super speciality doctors to treat former minister Katta Subramanya.

The former minister was hospitalised early on Monday after he complained of chest pain. Dr B G Tilak, medical superintendent, said that the internal medicine doctors will continue to treat him.

In case of emergency, the other doctors would be summoned. As for his sugar levels, Dr Tilak said it was not completely under control.

Although the blood pressure was stable, Katta continued to suffer from neurological problems and abdominal pain.

“His cervical disc and lumbar disc have collapsed, causing a lot of pain. The neurologist has advised an MRI scan. He is under medication, but since he has diabetic neuropathy, the effect of the medicine is not as much as what it would be on a normal person,” Dr Tilak said.

Looking at the present condition of Katta, Dr Tilak felt that the former minister needs to stay in the hospital for at least a week.
