Optometry, Ophthalmic, Hospitality Management courses

The Vasan Institute of Ophthalmology and Research is offering the following courses in Optometry and Hospitality Management through its Chennai, Trichy, Bangalore and the newly launched Coimbatore centre:

*A four-year B.Sc. Optometry course, affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. This course aims to raise qualified optometrists to cater to primary eye care needs in eye hospitals.

*One-year PG Diploma in Hospitality Management affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. This course exposes students to professional education in service management in any service industry like hotels, travel and tourism or hospitals.

*Six-month certificate course in ophthalmic assistance. This course opens up avenues for students with a basic degree to pursue clinical support services which are in great demand across the country.

The Chennai, Trichy and Bangalore campuses offer the following courses in the same syllabus.

*A three-year B.Sc. Optometry Technology course, affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, from the Chennai campus.

*A two-year Advanced Diploma in Optometry affiliated to Hindustan University Students who have cleared their 12th / 10th examinations with a good score and have had a science background are eligible to apply for the courses. All admissions would be based on an entrance test and aptitude test.

National rural IT quiz programme
The Department of IT, BT, Science & Technology and e-Governance, Government of Karnataka and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is organising the nationwide Rural IT Quiz for students from class 8 to 12. The programme aims at building IT awareness among rural school students, besides keeping them abreast of the latest developments in the world of technology.

The Rural IT Quiz launched in 2000, has been running successfully in Karnataka for over a decade. It has now been extended to five more states across the country. This year the regional rounds of the event will be held in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Jharkhand during August, September and October.

In Karnataka the state-wide written preliminary round of the quiz will be held on August 27, and district level on September 7.  The six state, Rural IT Quiz National Finals will be held at Bangalore on October 19, as part of  “BangaloreIT.biz 2011” hosted by the Department of IT, BT, Science and Technology and e-Governance, at Bangalore. 

There is no participation fee. Students studying from Class 8-12, including PU students in the City Corporation limits of Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Bellary, Davangere, Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum and Gulbarga cities are not eligible to participate in the quiz. All regional winners and national winners will receive attractive prizes from Tata Consultancy Services.

FLIP challenge
The FLIP (www.learnwithflip.com) National Challenge is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for B-Schoolers – leveling the playing field between the handful of premier B-Schools, and the rest. First year students can write FLIP’s Finance & Banking Fundamentals certification – they get cash prizes plus a visit to Standard Chartered bank’s dealing room, and a meeting with the MD – Regional Head, Fixed Income, Commodities & Currency, South Asia. This competition will help unearth the best talent from B-schools across India.

Gaming camp
Birmingham City University (UK) has come up with a new scheme, available exclusively to international students who apply to the new postgraduate course for game developers, Gamer Camp: Pro (MA/MSc Video Games Development).

Six international students (non-EU) on the highly rated, industry-backed training course for games developers, will receive £600 per month for the final three months of their 12-month long course, which forms a ‘guaranteed in-house work placement’. Gamer Camp: Pro has been designed from the ground up by major games companies.

The course provides intensive industry tuition and mentoring from working games developers, for talented games artists and programmers, as they work in teams to produce and publish games for Android, PSP and PlayStation3 in a simulated studio environment.

Students can take either a games artist or programming route on their way to being awarded an MA or MSc in Video Games Development. This will take place at Birmingham City University’s purpose built training centre, NTI Birmingham (www.bcu.ac.uk/nti), near the city centre.
