Hazare frail but firm on fast

Last Updated 24 August 2011, 19:03 IST

Hazare lost at least 200 gm more in the last 24 hours and his weight came down to 66.2 kg—5.8 kg down from 72 kg recorded before he began his fast on August 16.

“I don’t care if I die. It’s the ninth day of my fast and I have lost 6 kg. But I am deriving strength from you all,” the 74-year-old veteran Gandhian told his supporters at Ramlila Maidan on Wednesday.

Manish Sisodia, a close aide of Hazare, told journalists that the doctors had checked the condition of the activist on Wednesday and had advised that he should be hospitalised and put on intravenous drip. “Anna has refused to take IV drip after doctors advised him to take it following a checkup this morning,” he said.

Anna’s blood pressure was recorded at 140/80 as opposed to 120/80, while blood sugar was 106 and pulse rate 82 as opposed to a normal rate of 72.

Eminent cardiologist Dr Naresh Trehan, who is heading the team of doctors, briefed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about the condition of Hazare. “We recommended Tuesday night that for safety reasons he should be admitted to hospital... but he refused to move,” Dr Trehan saud, adding: “He initially agreed to take intravenous fluids, but then refused later.”
The cardiologist said that Hazare “slept well last night, his condition is better. But Tuesday’s blood test showed ketone (particles created by the body during starvation) levels are increasing and all parameters are now deteriorating.”
