Last Updated 10 May 2009, 19:21 IST

District Armed Reserve (DAR) police constable Chandrakant Kamble (35), who was profusely bleeding after his throat was slit, died before he was admitted to KLE Hospital.
Nagendra Reddy, an interstate criminal, had been admitted to District Hospital for treatment on Friday, after Reddy had attempted  suicide in the prison. Though he was admitted to hospital for treatment, it  was not registered as a medico-legal case.
Around 2 pm on Sunday,  Kamble, who was alone on security duty, had denied a person permission to meet Nagendra.

As per rules, three policemen had to be on duty. “It was a lapse on the part of the police,” confirmed Superintendent of Police Soniya Narang.

“There should have been four people on duty,” she said.

Kamble entered the ward as Nagendra had picked up a fight with another patient. Immediately, Nagendra slit Kamble’s throat.

Constable stabbed

Before fleeing, he also stabbed the constable in the abdomen and on the back.
However, it was not clear how the rowdy managed to get the knife.

It is suspected that the knife could have been passed through the toilet window or from the adjoining psychiatric or eye wards.

Earlier escape

Prison superintendent K B Kadli told Deccan Herald that on Saturday that he had visited the prison and had asked the police and hospital authorities to be more vigilant about Reddy as he had earlier escaped from the Victoria Hospital in Bangalore.
This was recorded in the hospital register.

The Prison superintendent said when Nagendra was brought to the prison on May 3, the rowdy had given him a letter stating that he was a mental patient and had been suffering from various ailments for which he had been undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital.

He had claimed that he was a software engineer. According to the prison records, Reddy’s age is  24 years and in the hospital register it has been recorded as 45 years.
The dog squad, which was pressed into service, came till an autorickshaw stand near the hospital.

Native of Andhra Pradesh

Reddy, a native of Secunderabad in Andhra Pradesh, was brought to the Central Prison at Hindalga here from Bangalore  along with 14 others.

He was allegedly involved in two murder cases in Hyderabad and one each in Bangarpet and Upparpet police station limits in Karnataka.
