Kodagu ZP resolves to oppose ESZ proposal

At a special Zilla Panchayat meeting held on Friday, Zilla Panchayat President Shantheyanda Ravi Kushalappa said “the ESZ is harmful to Kodagu. It should not be implemented at any cost. We do not want to harm wild animals. However, the humanbeings should be allowed to live. If ESZ is announced, then people in Kodagu can not live peacefully. The centre and the state governments should not come forward to implement the project.” The zilla panchayat decided to send the resolution passed in the Zilla Panchayat against the proposal to the government.

Forest officers K S Anand and Motappa spoke on the ESZ proposal. “The rules does not clearly say within 10 km radius of reserve forest will be declared as eco sensitive zone. The ESZ will be implemented only if the elected representatives and the people are in favour of it.”

Rajarao flayed the Hegde for stating that there is no change in government’s decision to include 16 hoblis of Kodagu under Western Ghats limits.

‘Give us chance’
As the ruling members  like S N Rajarao and Ballaranda Mani Uthapa began to raise their voice against the proposed ESZ, the Congress members Saritha Poonaccha, Venkatesh, Sathyu, Shakunthala Ravindra opposed and said “give us an opportunity to speak.”

Funds for treatment
Madikeri division DCF K S Anand said that provision must be made to provide money to treat those who are injured in wild elephant attack. He said the ZP should write a letter to the government seeking permission to set up a separate fund in the forest department.

‘Develop temples’
The ZP President said the government has released Rs 2.75 crore for the development of temples. The funds must be utilised effectively. Measures must be taken to develop temples situated inside Devarakadu.

Zilla Panchayat Vice-President H M Kaveri, ZP CEO N Krishnappa, Assistant Commissioner Dr M R Ravi and others were present.
