US approves Botox for bladder control

The face-freezing pharmaceutical injection Botox gained another medical use on Wednesday when the US government approved it for use in some patients with overactive bladder.

The new application was given the nod by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat people with multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury who suffer from urinary incontinence and must manage it with medication or a catheter.

"Urinary incontinence associated with neurologic conditions can be difficult to manage," said George Benson, deputy director of FDA's division of Reproductive and Urologic Products.

The new method allows a physician to inject Botox into a patient's bladder, where it relaxes the muscles and allows more urine to be stored.

Clinical studies showed such injections could decrease episodes of urinary incontinence for a period of nine months.

Botox, which is marketed by the California-based Allergan, is also approved for treatment of chronic migraines, severe underarm sweating, eyelid twitching and certain kinds of muscle stiffness, the FDA said.

Aerobic exercise: the most effective way to lose belly fat
A study has found that aerobic exercise is the best bet when it comes to losing that dreaded belly fat. Belly or abdominal fat — known in scientific communities as visceral fat and liver fat — is located deep within the abdominal cavity and fills the spaces between internal organs. It's been associated with increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and certain kinds of cancer.

 “When it comes to increased health risks, where fat is deposited in the body is more important than how much fat you have,” said Duke exercise physiologist Cris Slentz, lead author of the study published in the American Journal of Physiology.

“Our study sought to identify the most effective form of exercise to get rid of that unhealthy fat,” he added. When Duke University Medical Center researchers conducted a head-to-head comparison of aerobic exercise, resistance training, and a combination of the two, they found aerobic exercise to be the most efficient and most effective way to lose the belly fat that's most damaging to your health.

“But if you are overweight, which two thirds of the population is, and you want to lose belly fat, aerobic exercise is the better choice because it burns more calories,” he added. Aerobic training burned 67 pc more calories in the study when compared to resistance training.

Kinetic energy-powered electronics closer to reality
Engineering researchers Tom Krupenkin and J. Ashley Taylor from the University of Madison-Wisconsin proposed a new type of kinetic energy harvesting technology which, they claim could “dramatically reduce our dependence on batteries.”

Krupenkin and Taylor claim that the kinetic energy generated by a person's movements could be transformed into electrical energy using a process known as 'reverse electrowetting.’

Essentially this process would allow a person with an energy harvesting device embedded in their footwear to generate electrical energy while walking; according to the researchers, enough energy would be generated to power devices ranging from smartphones to night vision goggles.  

The researchers also state that the energy harvesting device could be integrated with a WiFi network and act as a bridge between a mobile device and the network, thereby reducing the amount of battery power needed by a mobile device to browse the internet.
