Veena Seshanna awards presented

Violinist T N Krishnan, who has accompanied Carnatic musicians for over seven decades, was conferred the ‘Veena Seshanna Memorial National Award’, while Nedanuri Krishnamurthy, the master singer, was presented the ‘Swaramurthy V N Rao Memorial National Award’.

The Awards have been instituted by the Bangalore-based Swaramurthy V N Rao Memorial Trust. Each award carries a purse of Rs 50,000, a citation, and a bust of Veena
Seshanna.

N Murali, President of the Music Academy and Managing Director, ‘The Hindu’, gave away the Awards to the two great performers the Trust chose this year. Veena Seshanna (1852-1926), was not only a great Veena player who had served the ‘Mysore Durbar’, but also a great teacher of music and principal architect of the ‘Mysore Paani’ in Carnatic
music.

Seshanna had also taught music to his talented grandson V N Rao and hence the Awards have been instituted in their  honour.
