India Calling at Hollywood

Instead, it will be a two-day road show-formatted extravaganza showcasing various facets of India that is aimed at attracting back the American tourist, whose number has fallen drastically thanks to recession and the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

“From Pandit Ravi Shankar and Anushka Shankar to our cuisine and culture, every facet of India that can attract the international tourist will be showcased at the event to be held at Hollywood Bowl,” Tourism Secretary Sujit Banerjee said here.

The event is being organised by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with National Geographic. “It will also highlight that India is a safe country to travel to,” Banerjee said.

The event comes riding on the fact that after seven months of negative growth, the tourism sector is once again witnessing an upturn since June, though not in a major way.

The ministry has also organised a three-day professional training programme for its officers, conducted by the IIT-Delhi, to hone their people, business and customer management skills.

Apart from this, the ministry has also firmed up plans to have six domestic road shows highlighting tourism in north, south, west, central, east and north-east regions as well as four regional conferences to take stock of how the states are utilising various funds and schemes coming from the Centre.
