College turns 'god's own country'

Maveli, Onappottan, pookulums mark Onam celebrations in SDM College

The programme which began with a procession lead by people dressed as Maveli and Onappottan had a huge student following all dressed in the traditional Kerala attire. The festival was declared open by College Principal Dr B K Ravindra by unveiling a huge flex stating ‘Onam celebrations 2011’ from the top of the College building on Saturday.

Inaugurating the programme, High Court of Kerala Judge Justice N K Balakrishnan spoke on the democratic rule followed during King Maveli’s time. Pointing out to India’s preamble, he said the framers of Constitution had planned for a welfare state and such kind of administration prevailed during the rule of Maveli as he ensured the equality of the people.

Karnataka Minorities Commission Chairman Anwar Manipady said that the people formed one casteless race during Maveli’s rule. There was no deceit, hatred and people lived with perfect harmony, he said and advised students to bring back the era by taking the rule of the King as an example.

MRPL Corporate Communications DGM Lekshmi M Kumaran said Kerala today has vestiges of agriculture with buildings and flats popping all over the place. Though Onam is celebrated in pomp all over the State, the form of celebration has changed.
People used to earlier pick flowers to design Pookulams (Flower carpets) and today they buy it from florist, she said.Speaking on King Maveli, Kumaran pointed out that the king was known for his moral values and hence he is remembered. People should uphold this values, she added.

As many as eight Pookulams (flower carpets) added beauty to the festival.

All were artistically designed with flowers of different colour combinations.

Students also put up an exotic cultural show. People cheered when the traditional dance ‘Thiruvadhirakali’ was performed.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, SDM Law College Student Council President Meera Nambiar said that of all Colleges, SDM is known for putting up an spectacle during Onam. This year the students have focused on details, she said.


Onasadya by Kerala chefs

A sumptuous Onam meal ‘Onasadya’ was prepared in the College. As many as 10 cooks from Calicut camped at the College just to prepare the 21 course meal.

Traditional dishes such as Sharkara Perivartham, Olan, Avil, Kutukari, Kalan, Parippu Neyyi, Payasaam were some of the traditional dishes prepared.

The food was authentically served on plantain leaves to all students and guests who visited the College on Saturday.
