CEC urges political parties to create BLAs

Speaking at function where a MoU was signed between EC and Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy here, he said political parties should create Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to set up a model framework to manage urban electoral process.

"Some political parties have created the BLAs, but many others have not done so far," he said.

He also appealed to corporates to come forward to launch campaigns inspiring people to excercise their franchise. "Jaago Re campaign sponsored by Tata Tea was successful which increased voters participation," he said.

He urged civil society not to restrict themselves to updation of electoral roll,but take their campaign to the next level.

Stressing the need to impart education to voters with the help of celebrities and icons, he said people have to shame those who do not vote.

"We started a very successful 'Pappu don't vote... aaha!' campaign in Delhi which made voters more participative. This kind of situation we want to create," he added.

Quraishi regretted that Karnataka was the biggest headache for EC in the last general elections. "Karnataka has achieved 67 per cent enrollment compared to Kerala at cent per cent. A lot needs to be done by Karnataka," he said.

Infosys Founder and Chairman Emeritus Narayan Murthy stressed the need for more and more cooperation between government and civil society.
