“The State government has ordered to relieve 122 aided school teachers from the district who have been in turn asked to work in 70 government schools and 50 other aided schools. I agree that error has been committed by the governance and problem will be solved in the ministry level. Until the next instruction is issued regarding the matter, the teachers should not be relieved,” the Minister said.

He was speaking at the district-level Teachers’ Day celebration jointly organised by Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, Dakshina Kannada District Teachers’ Day Celebration Committee and Mangalore City Teachers’ Day Celebration Committee at Town Hall on Monday.

Felicitating 13 primary and high school teachers who have received best teachers’ award, Krishna Palemar expressed unhappiness over employing teachers for non-teaching work including surveys and election duties. “Employing teachers for census work is a long time practise and it is acceptable. But using them for other work such as election duty is not justifiable. Half of the teachers’ time is wasted in accomplishing other tasks, then how can we expect quality teaching from them,” he said, adding the issue will be brought to the notice of the Election Commission.

In order to avoid any delay in the payment of salary, the Minister assured of doing his best to introduce online salary payment system, where the salary is deposited to the teachers’ accounts directly from the government exchequer.

MLC and State Organising Secretary of Karnataka Secondary Teachers’ Association Captain Ganesh Karnik extended his support to the teachers, who were present in the Hall wearing black ribbon, urging to fulfil their demands. He said that compared to all other States, the wage scale offered to the teachers in Karnataka is less.

“It is quite disappointing to note that teachers are not given the salary on time and the teachers protest in this regard is justifiable. The government should act quickly to stop discrimination in the wage scale given to the PU College teachers. If not, there would be no other way, but to appeal to the Court,” he said.

Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat presided over the function. ZP CEO Dr K N Vijay Prakash, ZP President Shailaja Bhat, Aloysius College Kannada Department Head N Damodara Shetty and others were present.

As many as 43 teachers from Mangalore city who retired from their profession in the year 2010-11 were felicitated on the occasion. Six High Schools from the city which secured cent per cent results in the last SSLC exam too were honoured.

‘End wage discrimination’

When the teachers from across the district were assembled in the Town Hall to participate in the Teachers’ Day celebration, a group of teachers from the Government Pre University College Teachers’ Association staged symbolic protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. They staged the protest urging to fulfil their demands which includes reviewing the wage of PU teachers, promoting eligible PUC teachers to degree colleges among others.

Speaking to media persons, Association President Jayarama Shetty said that with the implementation of UGC level pay scale to the degree lecturers, there is a big wage discrimination between the PU and degree teachers. “It has been two months since the State government formed Wage Committee submitted its report to the Education Minister. We urge the Minister to review the report and provide us justice by overthrowing discrimination,” said Shetty.

MLC Ganesh Karnik who visited the venue to support the protestors was sent back by the protestors who said “they do not need false assurances by the politicians, but they want their demands to be fulfilled at the earliest.”
