With former minister Sriramulu’s resignation to the assembly membership post and the arrest of former minister G Janardhana Reddy, political instability is once again haunting the state ahead of Dasara festivities.

For last few years, instability in government and political bickerings have set a common precedence taking sheen out of the Naada Habba. The turmoils within the ruling party and the state government had cast a shadow on Dasara festivities in previous years, rather too regularly. And, by the way things look, this year will be no different either – with Sriramulu quitting Assembly and arrest of Janardhana Reddy. Shaken by this, the Reddy supporters are likely to brew trouble for chief minister Sadananda Gowda. Political bedlam, yet again, threatens to cast its shadow over Dasara celebrations here.

Last year, chief minister B S Yeddyurappa had to miss the opening ceremony of nine-day Dasara festivities after Janardhana Reddy-led dissidence tried to topple the government led by him. The BJP central leadership intervened to end the crisis after which then chief minister B S Yeddyurappa attended Dasara finale and Vijayadashami procession.

It may be recalled that the Dasara celebrations a year before last was also not free from trouble. The then district in-charge minister Shobha Karandlaje faced non-cooperation from MLAs S A Ramdas and Shankaralinge Gowda who opted out of celebrations to register their displeasure for not getting a cabinet berth for two successive years. In 2007, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy’s refusal to handover power to its coalition partner BJP resulted in president’s rule in state.

Though, chief minister Sadananda Gowda is not facing a similar siutation, but there is enough uncertainity in the air following the resignation of Sriramulu. However, the arrest of Janardhana Reddy could be a blessing in disguise for Sadananda Gowda at a time when Reddy brothers threatened to haunt the government in protest against their non-induction in the state cabinet.
